Early during my internship, I gave an NBC employee some nutrition advice, and two weeks later she came back and told me she had already lost weight. What an exhilarating feeling! I knew then that I definitely wanted to pursue a career in the nutrition and fitness arena.</p>
<p>The following summer, I had another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become the first-ever sports nutrition intern at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Growing up a tomboy with an athletic older brother, I&#8217;ve always had a big passion for sports. Spending that summer working with Olympians shaped my career, as I gained a broad knowledge of how to fuel the world&#8217;s best athletes.</p>
<p>That dream became a reality when I moved back to Kansas City in 2001. Years before, I had moved to San Francisco and become a registered dietician after graduating from Kansas State University with dual degrees in nutrition and exercise science. Then, as a sports nutritionist working and national spokesperson for healthy living, I landed a job with the NBA&#8217;s Golden State Warriors.</p>
<p>I contacted the Kansas City Chiefs when I moved back to Kansas City. Within three months, I was working with the team, eventually becoming their team nutritionist. Seven years ago, the Kansas City Royals called and asked me to be their team nutritionist.</p>
<p>Over the years, I&#8217;ve made hundreds of trips to the Truman Sports Complex to meet with Royals and Chiefs players. Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez and I especially hit it off as we worked to change his diet. Our collaboration eventually led to a book project; &#8220;The All-Pro Diet&#8221; is about how how eating &#8220;clean&#8221; is the way to go for everyone-not just pro athletes.</p>
<p>It doesn&#8217;t seem all that long ago that I was traveling to KC from Manhattan with my family to watch George Brett and Frank White play for the Royals. Now, at spring training the two of them will stop and ask, &#8220;How are you doing, Mitzi?&#8221; I still have to pinch myself; these two sports heroes know my name!</p>
<p>It has been a pretty amazing ride. But it is perhaps my latest business venture that is the most fulfilling, as I help women transform their lives by losing weight and getting fit.</p>
<p>Based in Johnson County, Mitzi Dulan&#8217;s Adventure Boot Camp for Women draws women from as far away as Paola. We have fun while getting fit and learning how to &#8220;eat clean&#8221; at least 90 percent of the time. The results are just as rewarding for me as they are for my campers.</p>

For generations, east coast and west coast residents have been arguing over who&#8217;s dish is made better. However for our friends up north, the family managed Panzerotto Pizza is the clear winner. And after learning the history of the Panzerotto Pizza chain, it is simple to see why this little franchise is so cherished.</p>
<p>Panzerotto styled pizza is sometimes referred to as a smaller doughier calzone. Mozzarella cheeses and tomatoes are the most popular ingredients but the dishes can also be stuffed with pepperoni, onions, and other items. The dish originated in Italy in the 40&#8217;s but has become extremely popular in several Canadian cities.</p>
<p>The chain began in late 1976 with just one location in downtown Toronto. The small establishment, located at 501 Yonge St., was owned and operated by a chef named Alex Schiavone. Alex&#8217;s cooking experience began in the early 50&#8217;s when he worked as a gourmet chef.</p>
<p>In 1969, he opened up a small Italian restaurant in Ontario and spent the next few years honing his skills. It was during this time that Alex began offering Panzerotto style pizzas to his customers. The Panzerotto recipe is a calzone type dish that is native to a small village in Italy.</p>
<p>The dish became a hit instantly with the customers in Ontario and they began demanding it in big quantities. In fact, it was so popular that the business&#8217;s owner decided to sell the small Italian restaurant and opened one in Toronto that would sell the new dish predominantly.</p>
<p>Due to the style being unknown, the Panzerotto dish&#8217;s sales were slow at first. However, it&#8217;s supporters were eventually able to spread news of the tasty treat across Toronto and it won over most of its detractors. In 1980, Alex decided that he wanted to take full advantage of the success of his business. He began attracting some investors and, through franchises, began expanding his company.</p>
<p>The Panzerotto Pizza company has been going strong ever since and Alex and his immediate family have remained very involved in its operations. There are currently thirty five Panzerottos operating across Canada and the Northern United States. And Alex and his sons Frank, Joe, and Vito have over seventy five years of combined experience between them and are integral parts of the day to day operations of both the Head Office and the various store locations.</p>
<p>As of the mid 90&#8217;s, the chain was the first company to advertise city wide pie delivery with the internet. Hungry users were given the ability to go to the company&#8217;s site and order their favorite pizzas. With the use of this technology that was very modern and advanced for its the time, orders were directed to calling centers and then arranged for local delivery. The popular pizza chain, not willing to just stop, is currently still changing and improving their top of the line customer service skills.</p>

And for almost all of them, the favorite part of Halloween is the candy it brings. Yet, a recent study showing increased heart disease in frequent sweet eaters, may prove that candy is not so dandy!</p>
<p>As per the new study, continually adding more sugar to one&#8217;s daily diet, drastically increases the risk factors for heart disease. Higher levels of triglycerides in the blood stream than deemed healthy, and subsequent lower levels of HDL or &#8216;good cholesterol&#8217;, play havoc with the internal balance of the body.</p>
<p>As most of us know, sugar is a pretty high contributor to an individual&#8217;s daily calorie intake. But, when 6000 willing participants were put to the test, the ensuing result of 16 percent was staggering.</p>
<p>Care to venture a guess on how much sugar is consumed by a dedicated sweet eater every day? The top rung of the ladder included adults with 46 teaspoonfuls of sugar in a single day while the lower rung sang a sad tune of merely 3 teaspoonfuls.</p>
<p>Tips for staying fit and healthy always include a calorie watch. Limiting artificial sugar intake goes a long way in reducing the probability of heart issues. An average male may consume about 9 teaspoonfuls of sugar while a female is allowed 6. This applies to processed food as fruits and vegetables contain completely natural sugar. So remember to read food labels and choose lower-sugar brands.</p>
<p>Sugary soft drinks (or Soda) are easily available everywhere! Even if you wanted to drink something else, you&#8217;d be hard-pressed to find it. It&#8217;s no wonder then that about 25% of the US population is obese. The above survey should prompt food retailers to reduce the amount of added sugar in food and drinks. Also states must be prompted to levy a tax on soft drink consumption. Sounds drastic, but you&#8217;ll be surprised to know such measures are already in place in a few states.</p>
<p>Annual consumption of carbonated drinks is estimated to be about 50 gallons. If just a half-cent sales tax on the sugary brew could result in a 10 gallon drop in sales per year, imagine how much calories we are keeping at bay!</p>
<p>Heart disease is inevitable in a high calorie diet as we all know. But recent studies conducted on the negative effects of added sugar in large quantities, show a rise in blood pressure, and increased occurrence of diabetes and stroke. It would serve us well to cut back on the sugary treats and stay healthy.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The concept of the show is right out of professional wrestling, but there it is in living color every week on &#8216;The Food Network&#8217;. Prominent chefs from all over the world go &#8216;mano a mano&#8217; in judged cooking competitions. That&#8217;s the premise of &#8216;Iron Chef&#8217; which is easily the most entertaining cooking show in television history. Even non-foodies will enjoy the competition and the nearly inscrutable strangeness of the show.</p>
<p>The story behind the show goes something like this&#8211;there&#8217;s this rich dude, MC Kaga who summons the finest chefs in Japan to do battle in his kitchen stadium. Needless to say, a TV studio wouldn&#8217;t suffice for such a production: the kitchen stadium is in Kaga&#8217;s castle. Also in residence are three Iron Chefs, each representing a different type of cuisine (Chinese, French and Japanese). The summoned culinary challenger picks which Iron Chef he wants to take a crack at and the contest begins. The show was originally created by the Fuji TV network in the Japan, and the original Japanese title translates literally to The Iron Men of Cooking.</p>
<p>Adding even more &#8217;spice&#8217; to the show&#8211;each dish must include the &#8216;theme ingredient&#8217; which is kept a mystery until immediately before the competition begins. With great pomp and amid smoke and pyrotechnics, Kaga reveals the &#8216;mystery ingredient&#8217;. Sometimes it&#8217;ll be something basic like apples or tofu, other times it&#8217;s more obscure like ox tail or some otherworldly shellfish.</p>
<p>At that point, the chefs have an hour to prepare a seven course meal, served to a discerning panel of B-List celebrities that usually include a couple of &#8216;TV Presenters&#8217; and a &#8216;fortune teller&#8217;. The judges rate and discuss each course and declare a winner. Its a great honor to beat one of the Iron Chefs, though its no easy feat.</p>
<p>What really brings the show together is the announcin&#8211;&#8221;though I&#8217;m sure it loses something having been dubbed from Japanese. There&#8217;s a hysterical play by play announcer, an excitable color commentator, and an even more hyperactive sideline correspondent who will break in the commentary frequently with revelations such as observing that a chef is using fresh ginger in a dish or some similar piece of trivia. Apparently one of the announcers is a legit sumo wrestling announcer in Japan, making the strange juxtaposition between cooking shows and wrestling even more complete.</p>
<p>The dishes that the chefs come up with are always pretty amazing, creative and complex&#8211;if not always appetizing. Some of their creations look yummy, but a dessert with a compulsory use of carp isn&#8217;t exactly mouth watering for American palates. Nonetheless, the creative process and intensity of the competitors is amazing. Even as challenging as this is, the requirement that a theme ingredient be used in every component of the meal really ups the ante.</p>
<p>The Food Network now produces an American-ized version of the show entitled Iron Chef America. Despite the similar format, it pales in comparison to the original Fuji TV production.</p>
