farmer’s market adventures

September 8th, 2008

roxy and i took a little walk this weekend to the farmer’s market and picked up lots of goodies! some of my favorites:

blueberries

strawberries

squash/zucchini

and i just had to share this gigantic mango i found!! and at $1.50, it was a steal. i took a photo of it next to the ipod just to express how big it is…

i noticed and abundance of new potatoes, mushrooms and green beans  so i got some of those as well. for dinner, i pan fried the new potatoes and roasted fresh green beans with grape tomatoes, all covered with pepperjack cheese:

television

stephen dug up our “rabbit-ears” antenna from storage (mostly because he really really wants to watch the olympics). and so, for the first time in 5 months we watched tv last night. it was so awful. we watched most of “greatest american dog” which was ok. but then ended up going down to the store and renting “be kind rewind” and i thought it was so cute!! anyway. i got to watch letterman, and i’m happy about that. maybe it will be better once the “real” shows come back on?? probably not.

dumpster diving

July 1st, 2008

last week before we left on our trip to california, stephen was leaving our place downtown and drove by the old homeless shelter (it has recently been replaced by “the bridge” which is fantastic).  he saw they were throwing out a bunch of stuff including some furniture - he found these chairs; they are herman miller vintage eames fiberglass arm chairs!!! talk about diamonds in the rough.  so now we have five of them in our loft - absolutely beautiful and so much fun! i love them.

your dallas weekend rundown

June 20th, 2008

it’s weekend time! woohoo! ok just a few things i know that are going on this weekend ’round town:

johnny lang is playing tonight at the house of blues, he is such a soulful artist… show starts at 8.

tomorrow cork wine bar and retail store is hosting a benefit for the river network. for $5, you can enjoy organic wine from chilean vineyard natura paired with locally made cheeses and a reusable shopping tote. it’s from noon to 6 pm at cork(3636 mckinney ave., suite 170). wine and cheese and charity?! yes, please.

saturday night, i’ll be heading to the majestic theater downtown to enjoy comedian nick swardson perform.  that should definitely be a riot! show starts at 7:30.

also on saturday night, hands up hosts gracie chavez at the loft - should be some funky party/dancing/craziness for sure! here is some more info on the show.

so hope everyone has a super weekend! maybe i’ll see you around town!

edit: i almost forgot that the assassination city roller derby girls have another bout this weekend in mesquite! tomorrow night (saturday 6/21) is the night of the speed demons - they’re playing the alamo prim reapers and the east texas bombers.  remember it’s byob and bring a chair as well! a percentage of the proceeds will benefit the dallas women’s foundation, so watch some derby and feel good about it!

i’m available for parties

May 9th, 2008

last night my friend jennifer and i went to the city tavern right down the street from my place. it was a very fun night… taylor davis and his band were playing (as i believe they do every thursday), and i somehow mustered up the courage to ask if i could sing a song with them. taylor said definitely and asked what i wanted to sing - immediately i say janis, since that’s usually what i can do the best, but he didn’t go for it so i went with my immediate second fave ryan adams. he said “yeah! how about ‘come pick me up’?” to which i said “uh yeah!! only my favorite song of his!” they were on a break so he said he’d call me up there when they started up again. i thought for sure that he was just humoring me and probably waiting for me to forget or leave. but no, he sure did ask me to come up and sing with him. i was nervous and to tell you the truth, i don’t know if i’m any good. i just love to sing…i’m no aretha, or even janis for that matter.

at any rate, it was a good time.  i didn’t get boo’d off stage so i take that as a plus.  there was also a guy filming for the band so it’s a possibility that you all may be treated to the real thing. stay tuned…

ps. we had the nachos and they were delicious!

random question

May 1st, 2008

i see these guys on the corner of ervay and san jancinto (downtown dallas) at least 2-3 times a week.  they’re handing out fliers or something…are they protesting? striking?? i have no idea. do you?

downtown dudes

sorry it’s so blurry…moving vehicle, you know. (no, i’m not driving!)

anyway, just wanted to share in case anyone knows what this is about.

weekend fun times

April 15th, 2008

so i had the most relaxing weekend i’ve had in awhile… however, for me, it was pretty eventful and i thought i’d share.

saturday i took roxy to the bark park for the first time! while fun, i really wish that bulldog puppy would have not tried to mount my dog a million times - resulting in her being totally terrified and we left.

then i made a venture over to the dallas farmer’s market. wow, i don’t think i’ve ever witnessed anything like that! it was so much fun and i nearly bought out the place.

since i forgot my camera, i took this pic from jeffrey at IgoUgo.

here is a very small sampling of delicious findings (and my fruit stand i finally get to use since i have counter space!)

sunday i did a little shopping for my best friend’s wedding shower (yes - to bed, bath, and beyond).

i went to lula b’s antiques to find some decorative plates. with no luck i moved on to good records … where i always find something i just have to have. i took these beauties home with me:

records_1
l to r: explosions in the sky, “those who tell the truth shall die, those who tell the truth shall live forever”; david bowie “fame” single (featuring a remix with queen latifah!); sonic youth “the destroyed room - b sides and rarities”

so after that, i settled in with roxy, listened to my records, read beautiful boy (which is awesome, by the way), and thus concluded my nice weekend.
